What a beautiful story. Amid all the darkness and evil of people complying with evil, those who resist shine like stars.

Have any of y’all read THE HIDING PLACE by Corrie ten Boom? SO good! she tells how all the jews hid their jewelry in the hems of their clothing, only to get to the concentration camps and have to strip, shower and wear a uniform frock, their jewelry gone forever.

They got to sing and have bible study in their barracks without the guards interfering. They wondered why, when no one else was allowed to do so. They found out it was due to the fleas. They were infested and trying to be thankful “in all things” like the bible says. They were thankful when they realized.

What a fascinating and (mostly) wonderful

story. We need to keep these stories afloat lest we ever forget.

I’ve wondered how people could possibly be so dull as not to notice Hitler coming into power and how he twisted them to fear Jews who had been their friends. Seeing what I’ve seen the last 2 years, I think I understand. People easily made to be fearful are easily molded into whatever one wants them to be, say, think and do. Hitler said Juden were vermin and making them all ill with disease often enough that they believed the lie, AFTER he promised them health, wealth and a wonderful life. He began removing freedoms and wealth the minute he took office. Dangled carrots, then ya jes them away…

I'm almost finished with Arendt's "The Origins of Totalitarianism" and the whole mechanics of how they did it makes much more sense to me now. The story of European anti-Semitism is nothing like what I thought, I had understood it, like everyone else, at its most superficial level. It's a long book (I'm listening to it on Audible) but worth the effort.
