Some items that should be mentioned before someone embarks on this chelation journey.
Number 1 thing, she mentions it but it needs repeating. Make sure all the mercury/amalgam is removed before chelating. This is not as straight forward as it sounds. You have to pick the correct dentist, someone who is trained and skilled at removing amalgam. If your dentist doesn’t wear any protection (he should have on a mask with a separate air supply) and doesn’t provide you with one then he is not properly trained. Also a skilled dentist will use the appropriate x-ray technology to detect any residual mercury. This may sound trivial to some but it may be the difference between becoming healthy or getting worse.
Alas, no. When the mercury burden gets high enough it stops showing up in the hair. Often a person who is massively toxic will have a low mercury bar. When we analyze a hair test, we are looking for patterns in the essential elements that indicate that mercury is interfering with mineral transport across cell walls. This is ONE of the ways it makes you sick and only mercury interferes with mineral transport to this extent.
Cutler, with the help of a buddy who was a statistician, developed 5 "counting rules" to test for "deranged mineral transport." He wrote a whole book about how to interpret hair tests: "Hair Test Interpretation, Finding Hidden Toxicities."
A hair test will start to look more normal as you proceed with chelation, but it will normalize long before you do. We have to evaluate progress based on symptoms.
Chelating with the Andy Cutler Protocol starting in 2018, is without a doubt the best thing I have done for my health. I had 9-11 amalgams for over 50 years! It took 2-3 years, but the reduction in symptoms I had lived with for decades was very motivating. It helps to keep a diary. Summary of symptoms improved- earaches-I have always gotten earaches if outside in the wind. Since I had mono at 16 and my Eustachian tube was never the same. The last few times out in the wind, I noticed my ears do not hurt. Tested numerous times now. dysphasia (swallowing problems) gone, swollen glands gone, nasal congestion gone, molar pain gone, bruising easily gone, ocular migraines gone, sense of smell better, ability to sweat better, tinnitus gone, increased attention to detail comes and goes, but definately better, arthritis pain better, memory getting better all the time.
BP down to perfection. NEW after 5 mos of chelation- I’m sleeping deeply most nights, even when on round, my weight is back where it was when I had my amalgams removed and immediately put on 10lbs and I’m actually working out less to protect my adrenals. Inventive thinking is returning. Im finding obvious solutions to little things I’d just lived with or couldn’t figure out. Now they seem so obvious 🤦♀️ Im adding to my list of inventions again for the first time in many, many years. 😊 Face no longer turns beet red after a good workout. This was written several years ago. And the gains have remained! None of these symptoms ever returned.
"Some [poisoned by mercury] receive diagnoses they’re told are incurable—multiple sclerosis, lupus, Parkinson’s, chronic fatigue syndrome" - surely in this case everyone with relevant symptoms would be tested for heavy metals? What am I missing?
Can you have high mercury levels even if you don’t have fillings? I have two implants (front teeth broken on bicycle aged 8) but all my other teeth are very good and haven’t needed fillings. But I do suffer much of the chronic ill health you describe.
There are many answers in The Brain Saver book by Anthony Williams about getting heavy metals out of your system safely using food and safe supplements. I highly recommend the book whether you buy it or get it free from a library it is worth looking at.
Rebecca, solid interview. I’ve read accounts of people battling endless fatigue and mental haze that lifted after pulling mercury amalgams. A Norwegian study backs it—patients with vague complaints saw health scores drop 13 points in a year post-removal (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/joor.13080), statistically ironclad. Reports show sharper focus, steady energy, no metallic aftertaste, using SMART protocol to dodge vapor risks. If symptoms don’t add up, get it done right. No excuses.
Yes. But the mercury that has accumulated in your brain and other sensitive organs will continue to affect you if there is enough of it. You usually have to chelate for a few years to completely recover.
That is not true, he include cilantro in his heavy metal detox smoothies but they are not cilantro smoothies, they contain some other ingredients. Have you looked at his website and read his books, or even listened to a podcast? He is genuine and caring and offers a lot of free advice. If you don't eliminate causes then it will not work correctly and it also takes time. I don't understand how someone can injure themselves from food, only if they had not followed the recipes and information correctly.
Cilantro chelates mercury and should not be taken randomly even it is combined with something else. We have a massive support group and see a whole bunch of people who have injured themselves trying to detox with cilantro.
Please do not blame cilantro, sorry I don't believe for a minute that this is the cause of their injuries whatever they may be. It is a natural healing herb not a chemical chelater.
By the way in Australia we call cilantro, coriander, just for anyone from Australia reading this.
I am very grateful I found this article in my mailbox today, because it is a great timing, these are precisely the problems I am struggling with since many months and was starting to loose faith as nothing really helped. Thank you for enlightening me, I will buy the book and some supplements from them.

It would be good to see the two authors (Unbecoming and Ms Lee) get the BAA -- Beautifully Articulate Award, for 2026.
I just made that award up, as the article was crying out for it....
Stop making shit up. That's the preserve of science.
What's made up and why do you think so?
Come On Eileen.
EILEEN, IT WAS A JOKE. Like "Only science lies" type thing.
I'd extend that to: "only Science and the Legacy Schmegacies."
P.S. I am old enough to remember when you could find a word of truth in the New York Times.

We can't even begin to quantify or recognise the effects of the various poisons we've had to endure.
Would before and after hair analysis not be appropriate in monitoring progress and effectiveness of the protocol ?

Glad that I read a book about mercury back in the 90s and had all of my "silver" fillings replaced. They should be banned.

He gives very poor advice.
No longer take industrial waste vitamins or commercial wonder treatments
Chelate with Bentonite clay
Bentonite clay doesn't chelate anything.
It has a negative charge to attract metals. Used throughout history. Animals who ate it near the Chernobyl disaster remained healthy.

Not just mercury but all other heavy metals, see The Brain Saver book by Anthony Williams the medical medium (info on his website too).
He counsels people to detox metals using cilantro smoothies and then they wind up in our support group after injuring themselves.

Cilantro grabs the heavy metals and helps to detox them out of your body, and what do you mean randomly? Those people detoxing just with cilantro how much did they have and in what form?. You can read about heavy metal detox and cilantro here: https://www.medicalmedium.com/blog/heavy-metal-detox-smoothie and here: https://www.medicalmedium.com/blog/cilantro

Thanks, I will join the group. Just saw you're not shipping the supplements internationally, unfortunately .
Yes. I wish they would. They won't even allow freight forwarders. Only Iherb ships internationally as far as I know.
