I learned this about fever from my mother. I don't know where she learned it, but I would guess maybe her mother. My father refused to let anyone take my tonsils out. I don't know where he learned about that either, but evidently not everybody fell for all the lies.

We are just now learning how important tonsils are.

Wonderful article. Thank you.

To the point about 98.6 being "normal," at those rare times when I've been anywhere near a doctor's office and my temperature is taken, it is 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 "high." That is, 99.0, 99.2 or thereabouts. I've gotten the same response, "Your temperature's a little high. How are you feeling?"

Always I feel fine...I respond with the same -- I run "warm." All the time. 99 or thereabouts is normal for me.

As for compulsion, it runs rampant...

I'm Hypothyroid, I run 97.5, fast heart and pulse. Latter maybe the Synthroid. The ENDO and I disagree on the dosage, I run fine on 137, and he wants 150, which is more LEVEL 11 MUSCLE PAIN. The slightly high BP is caused by 3 things Freeways, Democrats' stupidity, and Doctors. It doesn't need treating, it goes back to normal when I get home safe. And I can vent about the other.

This is funny, Gail -- not your hypothyroidism -- but your description and the "results" you get when you return home safe and sound, away from the "white coat" with the chance to vent in the sanctity of your own home. :)

Ray Horvath thought my piece did, Gail's article contains a reference to one of mine, but it adds essential details that I've never addressed. I look at it as Senior, having lived through Carter, Clinton, Obama, and now Biden. You will find I'm an info hunter.

Years ago when my oldest child was maybe three years old, he had a rash and a fever of 104F (very high), yet he was happy as a clam and actually very active rather than lethargic. Out of caution, I took him to the pediatric clinic. The intake nurse immediately (and unethically) told me I should give him Tylenol (which a few years later became non-recommended for kids due to liver damage it causes). A few minutes later, I had the good fortune of meeting a rather sensible MD who told me that it was not at all necessary to reduce the fever, and that mostly fever-reduction is done simply for comfort. Meanwhile, my kid was jumping around like a monkey and giggling in the exam room. I forget what the "diagnosis" was, but it was some sort of innocuous and normal childhood disease, like roseola, "fifth disease" or somesuch.

YES! Fevers are a productive part of healing! Here's a trick I learned that really helps when you have a high fever -- like above 102: Take a pair of white cotton socks and soak them in cool water that has fresh lemon juice in it. Wring out the socks, then put them on your feet. Then, take another pair of socks -- 100% wool -- and put those over the first pair. This works best at bedtime. I did this with my kids and it almost always brought relief and allowed them to sleep. We used to call them "magic socks." :-)

Wonderful, thank you!

I'm curious, what is the lemon juice for, and why the cotton/wool difference in the two pairs?

Expand full comment

I wish I could give you some semblance of a scientific answer... but all I can say is that lemon juice is inherently alkalizing, and that the soles of the feet are highly absorptive. (Putting Vicks Vaporub on the soles of the feet is just as effective -- if not more so -- than putting it on your chest.) I've done the whole thing without lemon juice, and it worked, too...

Re: socks, the wool ones keep the cotton ones from dampening the bed... but that's only only a superficial benefit. I was told that the body attempts to warm/dry the damp feet, and does so by drawing heat from elsewhere, reducing the fever. How the wool helps accomplish this, I just don't know!

Excellent, thank you. You learn something new every day.

I was indoctrinated into fear of fever. I used a regimen of hydrotherapy, including wet sock treatment, to work WITH the fever when I came down with what we assume was Cov*d. The wet socks are also useful as an immune tuneup, say once a week. These experiences has radically changed my way of looking at fever and helped me unlearn the old wise tales.

An immune tuneup? What a great idea. Thanks!

One puts them on at bedtime; the outer wool socks keep your feet warm and your bed dry. In the morning...the inner socks are dry! Part o the magic.

Being 'poor' you learn to treat a fever with cool water in the tub, and Tylenol, if it doesn't break in a few hours. Seek help.

Cut the hair off, and bleeding were quack notions. Even the wealthy fell for those two. Feverfew was used if you knew a herb woman and she knew her craft. I've taken out stitches, and treated minor illnesses we had no money for a doctor visit. After reading Earl Mendell's Vitamin Bible started using them. Followed the Covid regime of them and added in Quinine Bark, and upped the Zinc. No jabs, no Covid, just normal hand washing. Avoiding doctors, where the sick are.

We all have horror stories like the ER misdiagnosing a 5-month-old's fever as just teething when their swab test said it wasn't Strep. Turns out it was Meningitis which wasn't tested for. Weeks in the hospital, between life and death from the too-high fever that wouldn't break. I highly suspect there is some minor brain damage, but her mom doesn't notice it.

But it goes beyond fevers. As Cilacs, Crohn's, and Gastroparesis patients will tell you. Hub has complained of back pain when a sudden 'missed beat' of the heart was what is called a Prebeat of the heart. Took years to catch it on an EKG.

Side effects of aspirin are only seen with long-term use. Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride of GAPS diet fame, recommends aspirin as being much safer than paracetamol / acetaminophen. The latter being particularly contraindicated in children on the spectrum.

Use soluble aspirin, try and get the lowest dose possible. 40mg is enough to help bring a fever down in a child if it's necessary. It is best taken with something in the stomach though.

Lots of useful information here, but please, allow me to add my two pennies.

A significant element is missing from the potential causes of fever: radiation exposure. Do you remember that "covid" was "diagnosed" with a fraudulent PCR test and external symptoms that could have been caused by a lot of things. When you wanted to enter, some places took your temperature.

It is a heroic enterprise to attempt healing, yet it's becoming more and more challenging, as the potential causes of a condition have been multiplying since the introduction of electric installations in the second half of the 19th century.

Diagnosing has become a nightmare:

As for an honest doctor, I had one as a young man. When I went to see him, he usually finished examining me by saying,

"Raymond, we doctors have no idea what we are doing, but let's try this."

It usually worked.
