Senator Malcolm Roberts and The Three Monkeys

“How the hell do you expect to get away with it?”

One of reasons I write this Substack is lest I forget.

It was ANZAC Day yesterday in Australia and Kipling’s line “Lest we forget” did the rounds in a country that either doesn’t know, or does but hasn’t acted out of cowardice or has actually forgotten what “Lest we forget” means.

Most people in Australia do not have a direct connection to any soldier that fought and died in the Wars, so what are we being called to remember?

To me those words mean a call to remember the principles that underpinned WHY we went to war, why those young men, many who volunteered, died, and WHAT they were fighting for.

Without those principles, and the will to act on them, the forces of evil rise again, as they have done these last two years. Evil is real, and it rises whenever people forget it exists.

I feel viscerally sick watching our politicians doing the rounds, attending ceremonies, and pretending to be the guardians and protectors of those principles.

We have some 800+ Australian elected members of parliaments across federal and state governments. I can count 10, maybe 15, that have stood up for the principles those young men died for, everyone else has forgotten or knew but was a coward and said, or did, nothing.

I concur with Carmel’s FB comment:

Our politicians learned an important lesson during the last two years, as highlighted in this excellent piece:

Damn, We Forgot

The lesson for those in power is this: if you make us fearful enough, we’ll stop asking questions and we’ll abandon our principles. If you keep it up long enough, we’ll pour scorn on those who courageously push back. In short: we won’t resist any manner of tyranny you wish to implement, so long as you sell it to us correctly. We are yours for the taking because now we worship no god but safety.

One man that has not been a coward and lives “Lest we forget” is the One Nation Queensland Senator Malcolm Roberts who on 30 March 2022 made the 9+ minute historical speech above, to a symbolically appropriate empty chamber.

This post is to honour him, and the handful of Australian politicians that stood up to the Leviathan and spoke truth.

They did something and I for one will never forget them.
